Everest Region Treks

Here in Nepal, it’s known as Sagarmatha. Across the Tibetan border, it’s called Chomolungma. You probably know it as Mount Everest—but whatever you call it, there’s no denying the allure that the tallest mountain the world holds over everyone who comes to Nepal to see it. The mountain is found in the country’s Khumbu region, where locals of Sherpa ethnicity live and work beneath the gaze of many Himalayan peaks: Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and many more. But if you’ve come to the Khumbu to trek in the Himalayas, which route will you choose?

Perhaps the most famous hiking trail in the world, the Everest Base Camp Trek is the stuff of alpine legends. Like most treks in this part of Nepal, the adventure begins with a short flight from Kathmandu to the mountain town of Lukla. From there, travelers will follow time-worn paths through the heart of the Khumbu, ultimately ascending to over 5000 meters in elevation to stand at the foot of Mount Everest itself. Including days set aside for acclimatization, this round-trip, high-altitude trek takes most travelers about 10 or 11 days to complete. If you only undertake one trek in Nepal, you can’t go wrong with the Everest Base Camp Trek.

While the Everest Base Camp Trek is certainly unforgettable, it’s not the only trekking route in the region. If you have less time to spend in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal, you might want to consider the Everest View Trek. This high-altitude hiking adventure can be completed in as few as six days, because it only ascends as far as Tengboche. But this is far enough to earn spectacular views of the Khumbu’s most spectacular mountain peaks, including Everest and Ama Dablam. And because this trek reaches a maximum altitude of just under 4000 meters, you won’t have to grapple with the rarefied atmosphere at Everest Base Camp itself.

On the other hand, if you have even more time to spend in the Himalayas of Nepal, the Everest Three Passes Trek will allow you to explore the length and breadth of the Khumbu. You’ll hit all the highlights of the region: Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Everest Base Camp itself. But you’ll also venture beyond the usual tourist route, ascending to the high-altitude passes of Cho La and Renjo La, as well as strolling along the otherworldly shores of the frozen Gokyo Lakes. With a maximum altitude of 5535 meters, this two-week trek is perfect for ambitious hikers ready for a challenge.

Here at Iconic Himalaya Adventure, all of our treks in Nepal can be customized to meet your needs. We’ll develop a bespoke itinerary that ensures a safe and unforgettable adventure in the Khumbu, from the relatively short Pikey Peak Trek to the epic Gokyo Valley Trek. There are many other treks  to explore the Everest region—and you can spend as much or as little time exploring these mountains as you’d like.
