Among thousands of ancient temples holding history and culture around Kathmandu, Changunarayan Temple is one of them located at a hill top 12km eastward from Kathmandu and 6.5 km from northward from Dudhpati of Bhaktapur. Historical Background:

The traditional Nepali styled temple preserving the history of the Lichhavi dynasty to the present day is considered to be one of the oldest temples. The temple is full of history and architecture and believed to have a history of years as it was built in the 4th century under Lichhavi dynasty by king Mandeva. Having survived destruction in 1702 and 2015 this Hindu temple has undergone several renovations and is still in use in the Kathmandu valley today.  

This temple has several stories of its formation, Local folklore links it with the mythological story of cow herder freeing lord Vishnu from sins while some of them say it is constructed and named to honor the victory of the legend warrior named Changu. Changunarayan Temple is renowned for its arts and crafts, whether it's wood carvings or stone sculptures, you'll find all within its premises. Two tiered pagoda-styled Nepali Architecture structure includes four doorways with sculptures of lions, sarabhas, gryphons and elephants on each side of the entrance.

Additionally, the structures are adorned with intricate carvings of Vishnu's eleven avatars, mythical creatures and other deities. Moreover, there are numerous stone images of Lord Vishnu carved in the sixth or seventh centuries that stand as artistic masterpieces. In addition, you can see the meticulous process of making mandalas, wooden masks, and other traditional crafts or even participate in it.
